Tai Chi and Qi Gong class in Nelson B.C. and 3 reasons why you should try it!

May 12, 2022

There is nothing better than Tai Chi in the park on a sunny day.

TAI CHI AND QI GONG IN DOWNTOWN NELSON B.C. TO HELP YOU STAY HEALTHY, FLEXIBLE AND STRONG.

Chen Style Tai Chi classes will be starting May 31st(weather permitting), 1:30pm at Gyro Park in Nelson and will continue every Tuesday at 1:30pm and Thursday at 10:30 am until August 30th.

Tai Chi is known as ‘the supreme ultimate boxing system’, a profound martial art and one of the preventative and curative branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) . As an embodiment practice it stands alone in terms of the therapeutic health benefits it offers, the energy it generates, and the internal awareness it creates. Here are a few reasons why you should try it!

Reason #1: Boost energy & calm the mind:

The practice of Tai chi helps boost vitality and promote longevity. The slow, graceful and rhythmic movements of the form massage the organs and work to remove stagnation and blockage in the meridian pathways while harmonizing and balancing yin and yang in the body. This boosts energy, improves immunity and enhances available energy and resource.

Tai Chi is also known as a system of spiritual meditation based on the tai chi symbol (yin-yang) representing the Tao. For the mind Tai Chi is a study in concentration, will power and visualization. The deep breathing techniques of Tai Chi help focus and calm the mind while the Qi gong practices of Tai Chi help relax both the nervous system and the entire musculoskeletal system simultaneously. This clears the pathway for the renewed circulation of the original natural energy in our bodies and minds, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of internal peace.

Reason #2: Increase strength & improve flexibility:

In Tai Chi we understand that in order to generate power you must completely relax. How do you relax the body? you must first relax the mind. When the body is relaxed then the cultivation of power and energy can start to take place. The Qi Gong exercises specific to Tai Chi offer a method of training the nervous system, mind and internal organs simultaneously so that the inner strength of the whole person is raised to a new level of power and fitness.

For the body Tai Chi is a therapeutic exercise. The practice helps cultivate and generate flexibility using slow relaxed movements that softly invigorate Qi and blood to free and open the meridian pathways, joints and tissues. With a focus on structural alignment the strength of the practitioner improves through development of posture, form, technique and structure.

Reason # 3: Improve balance & enhance neuroplasticity:

In the practice of Tai Chi we say that you must divide the mind in order to simultaneously; relax the mind, control the breathing, control the lower body(footwork), control the upper body(torso) and control the arms. By training our proprioception through the repetition of the form in this way we naturally develop better balance, posture and fluidity or grace in our locomotion.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese exercise consisting of slow relaxed movements for total self development. This practice promotes adaptability and flexibility of both the mind and body in order to improve memory, learning and focus. By learning new movements and challenging the memory with exercise, Tai Chi helps train the brain and increases neuroplasticity.

Tai Chi symbol surrounded by the post heaven (King Wen) sequence of the Ba Gua.

If you want get strong, healthy, flexible, relaxed and vital, then Tai Chi is the practice for you. It really is a perfect balance of yin and yang and is known as, the deadly dance.

This class is offered through Blue Heron Traditional Chinese Medicine and taught by Dr. Julia Pileski. If it is sunny out we will train on the grass. If it is rainy we will train in the gazebo.
